Disaster Ready Church
PROJECT SUMMARY
Disaster Ready Church (DRCh)
The Disaster Ready Church (DRCh) is a faith-based disaster preparedness and community resilience initiative developed and promoted by Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA). The program equips local churches to become centers of preparedness, humanitarian response, and recovery within their communities, particularly in disaster-prone areas.
The initiative recognizes that churches are often among the first institutions people turn to during emergencies. Through DRCh, congregations are trained to strengthen their internal preparedness systems, organize volunteer response teams, conduct community risk assessments, and coordinate humanitarian action before, during, and after disasters.
DRCh combines practical disaster risk reduction approaches with faith-based values and humanitarian principles. The program encourages churches not only to function as places of worship, but also as safe spaces, temporary shelters, information hubs, and centers for psychosocial and spiritual support during crises.
The framework consists of four key components:
- My Church
Strengthening church preparedness through emergency planning, risk mapping, facility safety, and resource mobilization. - My Community
Building collaboration with surrounding communities through awareness campaigns, preparedness education, and local coordination. - My Team
Developing trained volunteer teams equipped with basic disaster management, emergency communication, and humanitarian response skills. - My Response
Establishing coordinated and systematic disaster response mechanisms, including rapid needs assessment, reporting systems, and relief distribution planning.
The DRCh approach is rooted in humanitarian principles such as humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, while integrating biblical values of compassion, service, and stewardship. ADRA emphasizes that preparedness is not only a technical process, but also a ministry of care and protection for vulnerable communities.
Across Asia and the Pacific, DRCh and related church-based resilience initiatives have been implemented through training programs, disaster manuals, simulation exercises, volunteer mobilization, and community-based disaster risk reduction activities. These efforts aim to strengthen local capacity and reduce disaster impacts through proactive preparedness and coordinated response systems
