Jawali (55 years old) and his wife, Nur Aida (49 years old), are residents of Bangga Village, living in Dusun II, who were affected by the flash flood disaster in April 2019. They have three children, all of whom are married.
Before the disaster, Mr. Jawali was a goat farmer, and his family’s livelihood depended on this business. However, he was still using an extensive grazing system, which often led to complaints from local residents about his goats entering their farmland. When the flash flood occurred, all of Mr. Jawali’s livestock, which were not kept in pens, were swept away by the flood. He, his family, and the local residents evacuated to higher ground.
Initially, they received food and clothing assistance from various government agencies and NGOs, but the support was short-lived. This forced Mr. Jawali and his family to find ways to rebuild their lives by cultivating corn and working as daily laborers.
When ADRA Indonesia started its program in Bangga Village, Mr. Jawali was registered as a beneficiary and participated in the Livestock Field School program. Through this program, he received two goats from ADRA as part of a livestock revolving fund. Equipped with new knowledge and these two goats, he began rebuilding his goat farming business. In addition to the goats from ADRA, he also purchased more livestock using his own savings.
He applied the lessons learned from the Field School, such as:
- Housing his goats in a combination of raised and ground-level pens.
- Providing a varied diet, including odot grass, field grass, lamtoro, gamal, moringa, and Javanese tree leaves.
- Monitoring breeding by identifying the goats’ estrus cycle.
- Regularly administering vitamins and deworming medicine.
- Currently, he has also started planting odot grass on his farm.
By adopting these practices, Mr. Jawali now owns 20 goats. He has previously sold some of his goats to support household needs, for family religious ceremonies (aqiqah), and to purchase a 250m² plot of land for his livestock pen, which was previously located on a relative’s property.
Mr. Jawali is very grateful, thanks to ADRA’s program, he has been able to rebuild his goat farming business. Additionally, with the support of Sukakeswan, he no longer worries about livestock health issues.
