Background
ADRA Indonesia fostered 6 Women Cooperatives in the slums of Jakarta in 10 years of service, in which “Tunas Wanita Abadi” cooperative of Cengkareng, West Jakarta, has achieved substantial capacity, receiving “Best Cooperative Award in Jakarta” from Jakarta Governor in 2012. They are working professionally in dignified positivism although officed in a humble nook in the market, but have taken simple appropriate actions to improve administration, services, image and thus increase clientele.
Innovative Solution
ADRA offers to improve their capacity further by providing tools, training, and linkages with government, agencies and private donors, as well as learning excursions to have a comparative study with other successful cooperatives. The women cooperative is also advised on how to improve their financial products and other services – while continuing disciplined, good leadership and administration.
Sustainable Results
The current leadership is composed of soft-spoken honest diligent women or “strength of the soft” that do what they say, producing numerous improvements that have gained the respect of agencies and community alike. The increased donations, investments, and clients/members number, prove that principle-based systems and strategy development are working successfully for Cooperative Revitalization and improvement.
