Consultant Position for Assessment of Improved Cookstoves and Agroforestry/RFM Project for Carbon

Duration : April 8-22 2025 (10 Working Days)

Location : Palu, Central Sulawesi

Project : HIJAU Project

Funded by : The Federal Ministry for Economic Coorperation and Development (BMZ) and ADRA Germany

Background

The use of wood-burning cookstoves remains a common practice in 12 villages in the West Marawola District, which is also a project site for the ADRA Green Project. This practice has been passed down through generations, and to this day, these areas have not yet been integrated into the government’s LPG gas usage program.

As we know, burning biomass such as wood produces carbon emissions that contribute to climate change and air pollution. Therefore, an assessment is needed to evaluate the carbon emissions produced and to assess the energy efficiency of various types of wood-burning cookstoves.

The agroforestry pattern has numerous benefits related to carbon sequestration, including increasing carbon absorption from the atmosphere, enhancing soil carbon storage, reducing land-based carbon emissions, extending the carbon cycle through biomass wood, and improving ecosystem resilience to environmental changes. Therefore, an assessment is necessary to determine the potential carbon absorption of agroforestry patterns.

To achieve these objectives, in addition to consultant support, it is crucial to enhance the knowledge of project staff regarding carbon-related issues to ensure that all project activities are well understood.

Activity Objectives

This assessment aims to:

  1. Enhance the knowledge and skills of staff regarding carbon issues.
  2. Measure and assess carbon emissions produced by wood-burning cookstoves and agroforestry applications.

Expected Output

  1. Project staff gain knowledge about carbon and methods to measure carbon emissions.
  2. A training module and guidance document for staff on carbon-related activities are available.
  3. Reports and documents related to the assessment and measurement of carbon emissions from wood-burning cookstoves and agroforestry patterns are produced.
  4. A proposal for the development of CGCL programs related to carbon issues is prepared.

Scope Activity

This assessment includes:

  • Staff training
  • Measurement of carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions
  • Analysis of burning efficiency based on fuel consumption and heat production
  • Evaluation of the social and economic impacts of using wood-burning cookstoves

Time and Location of Activities

Duration: This activity will be implemented over 10 working days from April 8–22, 2025, with the following schedule:

  • Staff Training: 3 days
  • Community Workshop: 1 day
  • Field Visits: 2 days
  • Reporting: 4 days

Location: Three out of the 12 villages will be selected as project locations for field visits. The selection of locations will be determined in collaboration with the consultant.

Implementation Team

This assessment will carried out by a team consisting of from :

  • Consultant
  • Agroforestry, Agriculture and Combil Technician

Evaluation and Reporting

The assessment results will be compiled in report the end that includes data analysis, findings main, and recommendations policy . Report This will presented to project in the discussion forum.
