To start as soon as possible: in January 2025, we are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced and dedicated candidate for a position as:
Agroforestry Technician
Duration: January 2025 – December 2025 (Possible extension)

Organizational and Project Background:
ADRA Indonesia – The Adventist Development and Relief Agency is the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, committed to serving humanity so that all may live as God intended. One of ADRA Indonesia’s key initiatives is the HIJAU Project – Hutan Inovatif, Jasa Karbon dan Agroforestri untuk Kesejahteraan in Sigi project, located in the Marawola Sub-district, Central Sulawesi, aims to enhance the livelihoods of farmer families of Indigenous communities while addressing deforestation and protecting biodiversity in Marawola Barat through sustainable livelihoods. It focuses on restoring and managing critical lands using nature-based solutions, climate-resilient forestry, and the establishment of carbon sinks. The project provides training and other resources to boost agricultural productivity, diversify income sources, and strengthen local capacity. Additionally, the project addresses the rehabilitation of degraded forest lands in 12 villages, supports the acquisition of permits for village, social, and customary forestry, and facilitates access to government resources for afforestation, forest protection, and sustainable management. It also seeks to improve market access for regenerative agriculture and agroforestry products and introduces carbon credits and the National Emissions Compensation System in Marawola Barat. By working closely with local leaders and the Indigenous community, the project aims to foster long-term development that aligns with the values and traditions of the Indigenous communities while promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
Position Summary
The Agroforestry Technician will be responsible for implementing agroforestry-related activities, providing technical assistance, and supporting local communities in adopting sustainable farming practices. This role involves working closely with forestry groups to develop and implement training on forestry, carbon sinks, and cookstoves. The position requires monitoring the progress of agroforestry interventions, ensuring that project objectives related to environmental sustainability, economic well-being, and community development are met. The technician will play a key role in promoting the adoption of climate-resilient forestry practices, restoring and managing critical lands, and enhancing market access for regenerative agriculture and agroforestry products. Through these efforts, the technician will contribute to the establishment of carbon sinks and support the National Emissions Compensation System in Marawola Barat, all while fostering long-term development that aligns with the values and traditions of Indigenous communities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
The main duties and responsibilities to be performed by the Agroforestry Technician, include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Oversee and implement agroforestry-related activities, ensuring that practices align with project objectives and contribute to environmental sustainability and economic benefits for local communities.
- Organize and conduct training sessions for local communities on topics such as forestry management, carbon sinks, cookstove usage, and sustainable agriculture. These trainings should be tailored to meet the specific needs of target communities, including women and marginalized groups.
- Provide on-site technical support to forestry groups and local farmers, offering guidance on agroforestry practices, carbon sink management, and sustainable land use. Facilitate the adoption of improved practices that enhance both productivity and environmental conservation.
- Work closely with local leaders, farmer groups, and other stakeholders to ensure that agroforestry activities are well-integrated into the broader project framework. Foster strong relationships with the community to encourage participation and ownership of project initiatives.
- Promote the adoption of innovative agroforestry practices that contribute to long-term sustainability and resilience of the local environment and communities. Explore opportunities for integrating carbon credits and other market-based incentives into agroforestry initiatives.
- Collaborate with local farmer groups to integrate gender-sensitive approaches into agroforestry practices, enhancing perceived value and active participation in farmer organizations.
- Monitor the progress of agroforestry interventions, collect data, and regularly report on the progress, challenges, lessons learned, best practices, and successes. Ensure that these reports effectively contribute to the overall project reporting requirements.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in agroforestry-related projects, with proven knowledge of carbon sinks, and REDD+ projects.
- Strong understanding of agroforestry principles, carbon sink management, and sustainable farming practices. Proficiency in conducting training and capacity-building activities.
- Proven ability to design and deliver training programs for farmers and community members.
- Have practical knowledge of mapping and related tools
- Understanding of the cultural and social contexts of rural communities, with experience working in diverse settings.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities and Indigenous communities, government agencies, and project partners.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Having a general understanding of the NGO operational standards and donor requirements.
- Fluency in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Willingness to be based in the designed project in Sigi Sub-district, Central Sulawesi, and work directly with smallholder farmers of Indigenous communities
- Ability to drive a motorbike, especially in extreme road conditions
